Sikh Dating a Muslim in Canada

Hi Harry, I’m also a Sikh dating a Muslim in Canada! As you, I am also facing a lot of conflicts.

Although my boyfriend who is Muslim respects and understands my religion. He understands the meaning of Sikhism and does not want me to convert to Islam because that would be disrespecting my own religion and overall I know he thinks it is not right to make someone convert from their faith. And it is not… Don’t convert. Our religion (Sikhism) is amazing and you should practice it if you believe in it.

My boyfriends culture is also much more lenient when it comes to religion and his family is very open minded. It is my parents who I am worried about but my boyfriend as you, would convert to Sikhism for me. But I am a humane person and would never want anyone converting their faith for me.

Although Sikhism and Islam are very similar they are also very different. You shouldn’t have to pick love or religion. With love religion shouldn’t matter. Hanna

    Hi Hanna,

You are certainly walking on fire, if you are not well prepared, you will get burned. Don’t go alone, we will walk with you. Please keep us posted for how it progresses. We have experience with some 1200 youths and will guide you.

We are very happy to know that “(He) does not want me to convert to Islam … culture is also much more lenient … his family is very open minded.” So far, so good. Let us know if you have already talked to his parents that you two are in love and considering to get married. Are they endorsing your relationship? Are they also “does not want me to convert to Islam”?

On your point, “Although Sikhism and Islam are very similar they are also very different,” all faiths are similar–meaning believing in One God. However the difference is in the apostles/gurus/devatas. For Islam, Muhammad is everything, for Christians it is Jesus, while for Sikhs, it is Guru Nanak (and other gurus). So, know that the conflict is not about God but about God’s messengers.

You said, “It is my parents who I am worried about.” We can help you how to handle your parents step wise. First, get back to us for one question asked above. Get back.
