I am a Hindu girl. I want to marry a Christian (protestant) boy. Our parents are agreeing for the marriage. My father want that the marriage should be performed under the Special Marriage Act 1954. Please advise me whether after marrying under the provisions of the said act can the marriage ceremony may be performed in church also. Please advise me.. -Shreya

Congratulations for having a smart father. Now, do not do anything without asking him. His advise is correct to marry by the Special Marriage Act 1954.
Check with a lawyer but our understanding is that it is only the first marriage that counts. You could have as many other ceremonies as you wish after getting (secular) married.
Why you wish to have the Christian marriage in a Church? Is he willing also to participate in a Hindu wedding ceremony? To be equal, have a Christian marriage only if you are also going to have a Hindu ceremony. If the Christian family is uncomfortable sitting in Hindu ceremony where multiple Gods are worshipped, be concerned with their intolerant thinkings.
Further, you have to be careful for the church marriage because they will ask you to be baptized before marriage. Also church will ask you to sign an affidevit to raise children as Christians only. Do not agree any of these.
Major issue will be – what will a “formal” religion of your children. For that, simply say NO BBS. -Admin
