3.4: Church Marriage Contract

Section 3.4: Church Marriage Contract

To hold a Hindu-Christian marriage in a church most likely means the couple must sign a contract for marriage. The church will want to make sure the next generation of this family will be Christians.

PROMISES REGARDING CHILDREN

Catholic Party:

I, ___, reaffirm my faith in Jesus Christ and, with God’s help, I intend to continue living that faith as a practicing member of the Catholic church. In addition, I promise to do all that I can to share this faith with our children and children that have already been born by having them baptized in the Catholic church and raising them as Catholics. —Signature

Non-Catholic Party:
I, ___, recognize that my future spouse has promised to live out the Catholic Faith as a practicing member of the Catholic church and raise our children in the Faith of the Catholic church and I do not have opposition to this. —Signature

Additional information about such contracts can be found from the web site of the selected church for an intended wedding. See reference for sample documents for the USA and India.

The non-Christian party should understand the grave implications of signing such one-sided prenuptial agreement. Basically, one is ending his/her religious heritage of birth and accepting Christianity as his/her future heritage. Such a signed affidavit will have major implications if there were to be a child custody battle after divorce. One should consult with one’s own lawyer and parents before signing such legal documents.
