Bollywood actor Salman Khan, who appeared before a Jodhpur court Wednesday afternoon, came up with a dramatic response when the judge asked him his caste.
While taking down his personal details, chief judicial magistrate Anupama Bijlani, asked Salman his name, father’s name, occupation and other details to fill in a legal form.
When the judge asked him his caste, the actor first said, ‘Indian’, looking perplexed. Someone from the court even prompted him to say ‘Muslim’ but Salman ignored it and said, “I am Hindu and Muslim. My father (Salim Khan) is a Muslim while my mother (Susheela Charak) is a Hindu.”

Khan is truly meta-religious and appears to be fascinated by religion in general. But the fact that his mother is a Hindu and his father is a Muslim has made him the subject of much religious inquiry in India–a country where these two religions often clash.
And speaking of the wave of Muslim attacks on Indians, Khan said: All I can say is that the meaning of Islam is peace, the tenets of Islam are peace and when you ingrain violence in that…when you do not follow that, then that is the end of the conversation.
It may seem non-committal from a bi-religious man in the public eye, but Khan extends his interest in religion beyond Islam and Hinduism. He’s been known to pray at holy Sikh shrines and, a prolific painter, Khan has done portraits of both Buddha and Jesus Christ.
But my view is that Khan leans more toward Hinduism than he wants to let on. He’s been known to make international trips home to India just to make special Hindu celebrations and built a Shiva shrine in his family’s farmhouse.
Khan is a great lover of his country, so much so that it’s just another one of his religions! He said: I am an Indian. Nationalism is my religion. We want responsible citizens who think about India first. We should unite and do everything for the betterment of our country.

Islam is a religion of peace and hinduism is a way of life that is also to do with peace. You have given a great message but don’t know how much it is applicable in a practical situation. Lets say a Hindu and Muslim wishes to get married? Do the Hindu have to convert to Islam (for all practical matter, YES)? Can the children be raised in two faiths, going to mandir one day and Mosque the other (again, we are talking about practical situation).

May be wrong but our observation in general is that the Muslims will ask the Hindu to convert to Islam and have children 100% Muslims (100% my way, 0% your way). In most cases, the Hindu will not ask the Muslim to convert to Hinduism and will be happy to take children to Mosque and also mandir 50%-50% times.
