Clarifications on Singapore Civil Marriage Law

Mary says: September 3, 2016

Dear admin,

Please help me. I am a christian who is interested in marrying my boyfriend who is a muslim. We have been together for almost 3 years now. However, his parents are very religious and i do not know how to go about with our marriage.

1) I know that in Singapore we can register under the civil marriage, does this mean that there is no need for conversion?

2) Is it true that if something bad happens to my “husband’s” my future children will automatically belong to my “husband’s” family?

3) If we register under the civil marriage, is it still necessary to do the muslim certification?

Please advise me on this. Thank you. -Mary

Sharis Laws that all non-Muslims should know, Malaysia Marriage laws, A Hindu cannot marry a Malaysian Muslim, Singapore marriage laws, Indian marriage laws, DON’T Fake-convert (focus on Malaysia laws), Koran on Hindus?, Islamic Nikaah without conversion is not possible, InterfaithShaadi does not recommend this: I am in Singapore and married to a Muslim without conversion,

    Mary,

Can you clarified which country are you from and which country is he and his family?

Assuming you are in Singapore and planning to settle there for life, these are our answers.
    1) YES. Civil marriage means a secular marriage and there is no need for conversion.
    2) NO. After marriage and children, if your husband is no more, then children will go to you, the mother. If you wish to make sure, prepare a WILL and get it formally notarized in Singapore for exactly you both want to do with your finances, custody of your children and the final rites after your death.
    3) NO. Civil marriage means secular marriage. You two will be married in the eyes of government and national laws. Later, if you take Shahadah (conversion) or he takes baptism is your wishes and will.

Above will change if you are planning to go to Malaysia to settle there.

    Now big questions are:
is it very critical that you remain Christian till your last breath (and also in your grave)?
Do you wish your children to learn of Christianity (along with Islam)?
Does he agreed to your wishes? (We hope he is not agreeing all these temporarily just to get citizenship of Singapore and later change his colors.)

      Hi Admin,

      Thanks for your reply.
I apologise for the really late reply.

Yes i am a Singapore Citizen, so as my Boyfriend.

      To answer your Questions:

is it very critical that you remain Christian till your last breath (and also in your grave)?

Yes, i do not wish to convert.

Do you wish your children to learn of Christianity (along with Islam)?

I would not force my religion on my children, what i hope is that my children can get exposed to both Christianity and Islam and when they are older they can make the decision for themselves.

Does he agreed to your wishes? (We hope he is not agreeing all these temporarily just to get citizenship of Singapore and later change his colors.)

Yes he and i have a mutual understanding about our religion and we respect one another.

I have one last question about Civil marriage.

If we were to go through this, is it true that we will not get any government benefits??? (Exp, school fees deduction for children’s education)

      Thanks admin!

      Your help is greatly appreciated.

“Yes, i do not wish to convert.” Our experience is that almost any Muslim will not rest till he/she converts you.

“i hope is that my children can get exposed to both Christianity”. Islam teaches that Jesus as a Son of God is a monstrous falsehood (read). So what will you teach your children for who is Jesus?

“Yes he and i have a mutual understanding”, note this has no legal bearing. He can change his color any time.

“If we were to go through this, is it true that we will not get any government benefits??? (Exp, school fees deduction for children’s education)” — We are not from Singapore and do not know this. Normally if you are legally married, they should but do your homework.

          Hi,

At this moment we are established in Malaysia and would like to live and raise our kids around our family in Malaysia.i am a Catholic by birth(eurasian).does this have any differece in terms of converting? Do i still need to convert to Muslim to marry him in Malaysia?

          • February 20, 2018 7:30 am

Do you want to convert? They will be more than glad to convert you. However know that you cannot be any thing buy Muslim, even after your talaak (divorce) and even your 10th generation children cannot be Christian. If you get talaak, you will have to marry another Muslim only. Muhammad said: “Whoever changes his Islamic religion, then kill him.” (Bukhari 9.84.57). Is that your intention to convert to Islam?
